Went to another great Car/Bike Show in Philly. The Hot Rod Hoedown on 9/11//10. Some of the cool cars.

Took the board to the Show in Philly. The bike is ownded by a fellow Rat Rod Bikes memeber who came down from Flemington, NJ. He won the Best Bike award. I made the trophy for the winner that's sitting on the ground

The first 3 boards are done. They took about 3 or 4 coats of the poly/oil finish to get the right sheen.

Finally got the boards serialized (first 3 of 100), then wiped on the first coat of Watco Daniah oil (light walnut shade) straight up. Tomorrow, the remaining coats will be a 1/3 polyuerathane to 2/3 Danish oil.

Should take about 5 coats or so til the sheen looka about right.

All that's left to do before final stain and finish is to serialize the boards with this 1/2" metal punch set. Should have it in a few days.

Just got the brass headed barnding iron. Instructions say to heat it up with a propane torch for 3 minutes or so.....

.....then try it out on a scrap piece of wood....

Well, here's the first 3 boards all sanded and ready for stain. I wetted them down with some water to add a little depth to the grain and Cross engraving.

They measure 48" X 12". Board is 1" thick maple with walnut striping. Engraving goes 1/2" deep. The double striped board was my first one. I thought it might be cool to change to the trhee stripe look. The Cross is 8" in diameter.

Gonna do about 5 coats of a polyurethane/danish oil mix to finish them off.

A great shot from the '60s. Looks to be SoCal. I always remembered this image from back in my model building days and then caught it again while leafing thru model car catalog. Wonder if that '57 is still around.

So I made this surfboard rear bike rack and it came out pretty good. So I thought to myself, hmmm, wonder how one would look a little bigger, with some different striping and maybe a carving in the middle....

I found this image on the net and really dug it:

I grew up in the '60s with the whole hot rod, surfing culture in full bloom. Never did learn to surf, but sure identified with the scene. I had all the car models, Rat Fink shirts and other stuff that was cool at the time. The Iron/Surfer's Cross was all over the place at the time. Shirts, pendants, patches, stickers, you name it.

I happened to have snagged 2 vintage crosses off ebay a while back which to me, are the best looking of the '60s Crosses. I later found these exact pendants advertised in a 1970 Auto World car model catalog shown in this pic next to the actual cross:

So the Iron Cross and the surfboard seem to be a natural fit.
